XIE Zhenye, a postgraduate student of the Department of Physical Education, Zhejiang University, won gold in the men’s 200m event with a time of 20.25 seconds on the first day of competition at the inaugural Athletics World Cup Saturday in London.
The 24-year-old sprinter beat South Africa’s Luxolo Adams (20.45 seconds) and American Ameer Webb (20.51 seconds). The two-day event features eight of the top countries competing in all distances from 100- to 1,500-meter, plus eight field events. Each country is allowed just one man and one woman in each competition.
XIE is China’s fastest runner in the 100m and 200m outdoors events. Earlier in June, he clocked 9.97 seconds in the 100m dash at the International Meeting de Montruil, France. His best 200m record this year is 20.16 seconds at the IAAF World Challenge Meeting on May 20 in Osaka, Japan.
