The “Metabolic Syndrome early Recognition and Intervention” Program started in Hangzhou.

On December 3rd, the “metabolic syndrome early recognition and intervention” program led by Zhejiang University started in Hangzhou. There were 33 universities and hospitals participating in the program, which was supported by Key Project of the National Science & Technology Pillar Program in the Eleventh Five-year Plan Period. The implementation plan passed the panel argumentation hosted by Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering Denian Ba.
Deputy Director-general of Social Development Division affiliated to Ministry of National Science and Technology Zhe Yang, Deputy Director-general of Department of Public Health of Zhejiang Province Weihang Ma, Vice-President of Zhejiang University and Chief Scientist Maode Lai, Vice-President of Zhejiang Zhaohui Wu and relevant supervisors from Ministry of Education were present at the meeting.
The aim of the “metabolic syndrome early recognition and intervention” program is to establish the metabolic syndrome diagnosis system, early recognition and intervention of susceptible population in our country by multidiscipline cooperation and integrated innovation research. This program provides technique supports for early recognition and intervention of the metabolic syndrome to save the national health resources and to reduce the burden of disease, so that the population quality and public health can be well improved. Besides, the implement of the program establishes the demonstration base and research team for the prophylaxis and treatment of the metabolic syndrome.
The program, in which 33 universities and hospitals got involved, was divided into different tasks and multi-centers. There were 4 tasks including “the diagnosis standard and the specification of the metabolic syndrome” by Shanghai Sixth People Hospital affiliated to Shanghai Jiao Tong University, “early recognition of the susceptible population to metabolic syndrome” by School of Medicine, Zhejiang University, “the relativity between intrauterine environment and the metabolic syndrome with its prevention technique” by the Children's Hospital Zhejiang University School of Medicine, and “the comprehensive behavior intervention of the metabolic syndrome” by China-Japan Friendship Hospital affiliated to Ministry of Health. In additional, Sir Run Run Shaw Hospital, the Second Affiliated Hospital of Zhejiang University School of Medicine, the Children's Hospital of Zhejiang University School of Medicine, Women’s Hospital, School of Medicine, Zhejiang University and Department of Public Health undertook the tasks as the elites.
